Named in honor of Cameron Crowe's immortal appropriation of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" it's the Lloyd Dobler Award for 2012's best use of a pop song.
A lot of this category's heavy hitters were in play in this year. Wes Anderson. Quentin Tarantino. Paul Thomas Anderson. Only this category's all time champ, Martin Scorsese, can compete with this line up.
Yet in 2012 all the big dogs were beaten out by a little film unknown to 99.9% of audiences.
Tabu for its use of "Be My Baby"
There are few clichés more familiar than the star-crossed lovers separately while a sad song plays on a soundtrack. Yet Miguel Gomes breathes new life into this old chestnut just as he works wonders with all elements of movie romance in Tabu's sublime second half.
Aurora is pregnant and married in colonial Africa. Ventura is a movie star handsome roustabout who has skipped town when he realized their romance was doomed. Gomes cuts between them as the Ventura's band records the Spanish language version of The Ronettes classic. The sight of him drumming along while tears stream down his face is one of the the year's cinematic epiphanies.
Not since the Mulholland Dr. climaxed with Roy Orbison's "Crying" has a Spanish language cover been used so well.
